A Simple Streaming Starter Setup: USB Microphone and Stream Controller

Two upgrades that make streams and voice chat sound and run better: a USB condenser mic and a compact stream controller.

If you are starting to stream or record, two upgrades tend to make the biggest difference before you think about cameras or lights: how you sound and how easily you control your stream. This guide covers one option for each.

Step 1: a dedicated microphone

Headset microphones are built to be small and convenient. A desk microphone gives you a bigger capsule and more control over placement.

Things to look for:

  • Connection. A USB microphone plugs straight into your PC or console, with no audio interface or mixer needed.
  • Pickup pattern. A cardioid microphone mainly picks up sound from the front, which helps keep keyboard and room noise down.
  • Headphone output. Lets you hear yourself without delay while you talk.

The Elgato Wave Neo checks those boxes: a USB-C condenser microphone with a cardioid pattern, up to 24-bit / 96 kHz, and a 3.5 mm headphone output. Elgato includes a desk stand, a riser, and a pop filter, and the mic works with Elgato’s free Wave Link software. Check the system requirements before buying: Elgato lists macOS 14.2+, Windows 11 (64-bit), iPadOS 17+, or Android 10+.

Step 2: a stream controller

A stream controller is a small panel of programmable keys. Instead of alt-tabbing to switch scenes, mute your mic, or start a clip, you press a key.

The Elgato Stream Deck Neo is the compact entry point: 8 customizable LCD keys, 2 touch points, and an Infobar, connected by USB-C and configured with the free Stream Deck software. It measures 107 × 26 × 78 mm, so it fits beside a keyboard. Elgato lists Windows 11 or later, or macOS 13 or later, as requirements.

Putting it together

  1. Set up the microphone first and get your levels right: it affects every stream and call.
  2. Add the controller, then map your most frequent actions: mute, scene switching, and starting or stopping the stream.
  3. Add more keys or profiles later, as your stream grows.

Both products are from the same brand, which keeps the software side simple, but neither depends on the other: you can start with whichever solves your bigger problem today.
